The topic that I am researching is about a new study shows that dogs have areas in their brains dedicated to voice recognition, just like humans. Dogs are also sensitive to “acoustic cues of emotion”, According to a study in the cell press journal on February 20, 2013. This study suggests that this ability to recognize voices was evolved at least 100 million years ago, which is the oldest ancestors of dogs and humans; this explains the social, and behavioral connection between dog and humans. Attila Andics from the MTA-ELTE Comparative Ethology Research Group in Hungary and several other researchers trained 11 different dogs to lay down and sit motionless on an MRI Table, this makes it so she can have the same experiment run on humans and dogs, this is also something that has never been done before. What they did is they took each dogs and each human’s brain activities while dogs listened to human sounds and humans listened to dog sounds, from whining to crying to laughing to barking. The MRIs showed that humans and dogs both have voice areas in almost the same area in the brain. The Results are that humans react better to other humans and dogs react better to other dogs. Another similarity between dogs and humans are that we process emotional sounds in the same way that dogs do. There were also some differences in dogs and humans, such as in dogs, 48% of all sound-sensitive brain regions react better to sounds rather than voices, and in humans only 3% of sound-sensitive brain regions react better to sounds rather that voices. This study is only the first step in telling how dogs have such a good way of sensing their human’s emotions.

This article is very interesting because it shows how dogs can tune into our emotions and kind of read our minds. My opinion in this subject is very strong because I have a dog myself and she always knows when somebody is angry at her or if somebody is happy with her. She can also tell if somebody is angry at somebody else, such as if my parents are angry at me she tends to avoid the family and go to the basement by herself or if we are all in the living room watching TV she comes in and sits next to us on the floor. This breakthrough is very significant because we will eventually be able to understand the dogs brain and how it processes it’s emotions as well as ours. This also strikes up good conversations about if dogs are just like spouses in which they are emotionally connected and they can just tell when you are sad or happy without even expressing the emotion itself, because just like I said before my dog can sure tell if anybody in the family is showing an abnormal emotion. This would be an interesting topic to research in the future so we can make even larger scientific breakthroughs.
