Ebola Virus

The Ebola virus has been spreading and scientists are trying to find out why. There has been an outbreak of Ebola in the country Sierra Leone, Africa. In the town Freeport, Sierra Leone all residents have been told to stay indoor for three days. The government is trying to stop the spread of Ebola and find out how this disease is being spread. This has been very difficult because people are being misinformed about how this disease is being spread. Residents are panicking and taking their fear out on those who are trying to help. Even though there are several organizations trying to help stop the spread of this disease, the outbreak is continuing to rise. Scientists are trying to figure out who are Ebola carriers. Ebola can spread easily and can kill people. Many people are scared that they have the disease and are spreading it.

Dr. William Karesh has been studying apes for years and found out that apes are a carrier of Ebola. There have been discoveries made in finding Ebola antibodies in the poop of apes. Scientist used to rely on getting blood or tissue samples from apes to find the antibodies. Getting blood and tissue samples from apes is much more difficult than getting a poop sample. Using poop samples allows them to be more accurate because there is more of it and this is how they are finding the virus. This method will help track large outbreaks in the jungle to help prevent future outbreaks. Since Ebola is more deadly in apes than people, being able to find the Ebola virus in the apes poop will help save apes lives by finding it earlier. Apes are more likely to have Ebola than humans. About 95% of Apes with this virus will die. Over the past 20 years, the ape population has decreased 25% because if the Ebola virus. With so many apes dying it is important for scientists to come up with a vaccination to help prevent the spread of Ebola. If scientist can find areas where these outbreaks occur, this may also help with finding a vaccine to help control the spread. Scientists have been close to finding a vaccine, but the process to have it approved can be difficult. One vaccine that has been rejected for humans may show to prevent Ebola in apes which is promising. There have been other vaccines developed by companies that prevent it in mice. A vaccine for humans could be closer than people think. Finding discoveries in ape poop, not only help apes but humans and other mammals around them.

I think that this is a very concerning case because this is spreading really fast in Africa and someone could come to the United States not knowing that they have this disease and give it to someone here. That would then spread across the United States. Since this disease can kill people it could affect myself or someone I am close to by possibly killing them or making them very sick. It is a good thing that scientists are trying to come up with a vaccine for Ebola so it does not become a world wide problem. When I first read this article, I thought is was weird how scientists are using the apes poop to see if they have the virus. It is actually interesting how they can use that and see what they can do to help prevent the virus.
